What to Wear, Vol. X

I always tell each of my clients the same thing when they ask about what to wear for their session:

“Boudoir is extra AF as an art form.  It works best if you really lean into that and indulge yourself when shopping for your outfits.  Get wild with what you wear, if that’s your style.  Go as big or as decadent as you’d like.  Maybe step out of your comfort zone and go for something a little flashier than what you might normally choose for yourself.  There’s no wrong answer here!”

Translation:

  • Wear the garter belt with thigh-high stockings.
  • Go for the super strappy bodysuit.
  • YES to the bra and panty set with floral appliqués.
  • Rhinestones, chains, lace, mesh, fishnets…100% approve!

Ultimately, the more texture your outfits have, the more visual intrigue will come through in the final photos.  The set my client is wearing in the photos below is a prime example.  The lace frills on the outline of her lingerie add some extra oomph.  The hand-embroidered floral accents add depth to the sheer mesh fabric while keeping the vibe feminine and flirty.  Finally, it’s the little details — the bows, buttons, and booty-framing garter belt — that bring it all together.

Outfit: Unfortunately, I don’t have this information but I would highly recommend perusing For Love and Lemons if you’re looking for a similar style.  They’re very feminine, whimsical, and romantic.  If that’s your vibe, check them out!

Hair and makeup: Done by my always-reliable hair and makeup team, KimJ Beauty! We’ve known each other and worked together for something like…over ten years at this point!  I wish I could remember exactly when (and where) we met, back when I was full-time with weddings and family photos! Kim and the stylists on her team worked over 60 (!) boudoir sessions with me last year in 2022 and are scheduled for just as many for this year — if not more as my schedule continues to fill up!  I’m so grateful to have an amazing hair + makeup team who knows exactly what my clients want and need for their boudoir hair styling and makeup application.

Products ordered: A 5×7 onyx glass box with 25 satin lustre prints inside.

Retouching level selected: Photographer’s choice, which is an “as you need it” basis where each individual photo is retouched based on exactly what it needs — the opposite of a “one retouching level fits all” situation.  Sometimes, certain light in your end photos will make you look ethereal and dewy and glowy AF and render no need for retouching at all!  Other times, direct, midday sunlight can be just a bit harsh, so there’s nothing wrong with a little airbrushing to smooth things out.
